Building Permit & Occupancy Requirements and Fees

Building Permits are required in New Hampton. Please call the Selectmen's Office for further information. Building Permit applications are available at the Selectmen's Office. Once submitted, Building Permits are reviewed by the Board of Selectmen at their regularly scheduled meetings on Thursday evenings. The Board has up to 30 days to approve or deny an application. Non-residential applications or residential applications encompassing more than 10 dwelling units shall be approved or denied in 60 days.
The following information must be furnished with the application:
- Map & Lot # and completed "Description of Work" portion
- Elevation above sea level if you are in the floodplain
- Water and power sources
- State of NH septic system "approval for construction" permit #
- State or Town approved Driveway Permit number
- Diagramed Plot Plan showing the existing and proposed buildings, including septic, with ALL boundary setback distances.
- When applicable - State approved Residential Energy Code Application Approval number (obtained from the Public Utilities Commission; form provided by our office).
- Cash or check made payable to the "Town of New Hampton"
Building and Life Safety Codes: All work shall be in compliance with all applicable State of New Hampshire building and Life Safety codes. It is the responsibility of the person performing the work to insure that this requirement is met.
Installation of any fossil fuel, propane or interior wood fired heating systems, regardless of cost, shall require a building permit, inspection and approval by the Fire Department.
Expiration of Permits: All building permits shall expire one (1) year from the date of issuance and must be renewed in writing regardless of the status of the project (unless completed or abandoned). Renewal of the building permit with no additional fee is permitted for incomplete projects provided twenty-five percent (25%) of the construction is completed per year. It is the permittee's responsibility to return the permit to the building official and request the extension.

- New structure
- Expansion or change of use
- Substantial improvements (cumulative costs exceed 50% of appraised value prior to start of repair or improvement). To apply for a Certificate of Occupancy the construction, repair, remodeling, erection etc. must be completed and the Building Permit returned with the Certificate of Occupancy application with documentation attesting to the installation of the following systems:
- State of New Hampshire approval for operation of a septage disposal system or other permitted system in accordance with RSA 147:8.
- Water supply, either private or public.
- Adequate power source for Electrical System (i.e., electric, solar, wind)
- Fire Department inspection results for fossil fueled, propane or interior wood fired heating system (if required i.e., year round use).
- Installation of Hard Wired Smoke Detectors
- Installation of Carbon Monoxide Detectors
- Driveway in accordance with either State or Town permits.

Sign Permits
All signs in the Town of New Hampton shall require a Sign Permit. There are some exemptions, which are listed in the Zoning Ordinance. The Board of Selectmen issue sign permits upon evidence that all applicable conditions of the Zoning Ordinance are met.
